Godfrey’s is Growing — A Founder Update

Hello Popcorn People,

Well. This escalated quickly.

Just over two years ago, we started Godfrey’s with a slightly unhinged idea: make ridiculously good popcorn, inject a dangerous amount of nostalgia into the West End, and somehow go toe-to-toe with the best snack brands on the planet.

Against all sensible odds… it seems to be working.

What started as a small popcorn operation in Covent Garden has somehow turned into Londoners queueing for popcorn, tourists hauling bags home in suitcases, and Selfridges regularly selling us out faster than we can pop the stuff.

Which is wonderful. Also mildly terrifying.

Because behind the scenes, Godfrey’s has still essentially been held together with caramel, caffeine and blind optimism.

Every email? Us.
Every review? Us.
Every customer issue, late-night idea, panic, spreadsheet, machine fault and “quick question”? Also us.

At some point, somewhere between burning through inboxes and shovelling popcorn into bags at alarming speed, I realised we needed help.

So I emailed Rich from Get Baked.

Now, Rich didn’t know me from Adam. But I’d admired Get Baked for years. It was bold, funny, chaotic in the right ways and completely uncompromising - all the things I secretly hoped Godfrey’s might become one day.

My expectations were low.
Best case scenario? A bit of founder advice.
Worst case? My email disappears into the digital abyss forever.

Instead, we ended up spending hours on the phone talking about popcorn, entertainment, branding, snacks, nostalgia and the kind of businesses we actually wanted to build.

Turns out, Rich and I share the same dangerous trait:

Neither of us knows when to leave a silly idea alone.

Before long, conversations turned into plans. Plans turned into spreadsheets. Spreadsheets turned into a slightly concerningly ambitious masterplan to build the UK’s greatest entertainment snack company.

The goal?

To create the snacks people associate with the best nights: cinema trips, theatre dates, sofa marathons, guilty midnight binge-watches and the sort of evenings where “just one episode” becomes a hostage situation.

Everything but the movie.

So, we’re incredibly excited to finally announce that Get Baked and Godfrey’s are officially joining forces.

Rich, Amy, Rach and I are building something very special together.

Godfrey’s will continue doing what we do best , wildly indulgent popcorn - but now we’ll also be expanding into new entertainment snacks, ridiculous ideas, nostalgic creations and products specifically designed for cinemas, couches and emotionally charged Netflix sessions.

Honestly, we cannot wait to show you what we’ve been working on.

Now…

What does this mean for our little Covent Garden popcorn kitchen?

Well, it’s getting a glow-up.

We’re transforming the space into the new home of Get Baked x Godfrey’s,  bringing brand new Godfrey’s creations together with a permanent Get Baked presence in London for the very first time.

To make this happen, the shop will temporarily close from 8th June, with a grand reopening planned for 3rd July.

Trust us: it’ll be worth it.

And finally -  genuinely - thank you.

To everyone who’s bought popcorn, posted photos, told friends, left reviews, queued outside the shop, supported us from day one or simply believed this weird little popcorn dream had legs:

Thank you.

We started this thing not really knowing where it would go.

Now, 24 months later, it feels like we’re only just getting started.

(One sofa at a time.)

With huge gratitude,

Luke (and Rach) Godfrey

Stay tuned.
